ZEN MECHANICS is the Psychedelic Trance project of Wouter Thomassen, founder of the SOURCECODE TRANSMISSIONS label, born in Holland, but now based in Byron Bay, Australia.
Drawing from his experience in the Dutch underground scene as a DJ, graphic designer, and event organizer, he formed Zen Mechanics around 2003. He started merging elements of Progressive Trance with powerful driving basslines, and ethereal Ambient overtones into a signature sound brimming with vibe and atmosphere, made for the big open-air dancefloors.
Over the years he has become an influential artist, with many releases and compilations under his belt (on labels such as Iboga, Nano, Iono, Aleph Zero, Flow, Neurobiotic) and many remixes and collaborations, most notably the project ZENTURA (with Yoni Oshrat – Ace Ventura) and artists like Perfect Stranger, Dick Trevor, Eat Static, Symbolic, Egorythmia, Liquid Soul, Yestermorrow, E-Clip, Sonic Species, Ritmo, Headroom, Allaby, etc).
His debut album “Holy Cities” (Neurobiotic Records 2008) topped the Beatport charts for weeks, landed him a nomination for best Psytrance artist for the annual Beatport awards, and garnered support from both underground and more mainstream DJs such as Christopher Lawrence & John 00 Fleming, who licensed several tracks for the Ministry of Sound label. Holy Cities” was followed by a remix CD “Re: modified”, containing remixes by some of the scene’s top artists.
